We are pleased to announce that Tarneit Doctors are now offering iron infusions at the clinic.

What is an Iron Infusion?

Iron is essential for the transport of oxygen to the body’s tissues. An intravenous infusion means giving something directly into the bloodstream via a vein. This is done by placing a needle into a vein with an attached drip that contains iron. This is then infused into the vein to mix with the blood in your body. The infusion takes 15 minutes and you will be monitored for 30 minutes after the infusion is complete.

Who might need an iron infusion?

The most common way to treat iron deficiency is to take iron tablets or liquid by mouth, this usually works well for most people and is normally tried first.

An Iron infusion may be needed if:

· You are not able to take iron tablets

· You are not responding to iron tablets / liquid

· Need to get your iron levels up quickly

· If you have kidney disease or chronic heart failure

Risks and Benefits of an Iron infusion

Please speak to your doctor about risks, benefits and alternatives available to you.

Are there any side effects with an Iron infusion?

If side effects do occur, they are usually mild and will settle on their own. Some common side effects include:

· Nausea, headache, dizziness, flushing, skin rash

· Changes to blood pressure or pulse

Uncommon side effects include:

· Skin Staining (due to leakage of the iron into the tissue)

· Anaphylactoid reaction (which may cause face/mouth/tongue swelling and difficulty breathing)

Before your appointment

Before your appointment you will have an initial standard consultation with your Doctor to confirm if an iron infusion is suitable for you. They will then go over the risks and benefits before confirming and booking an appointment for an infusion.

Cost

There will be a $150 out of pocket cost for the treatment plus the cost of your script.
